Most genuine knowledge work produces a Hubstaff activity level between 40 and 70 percent. If you are sitting at 40 percent and worrying about it, you are probably in normal territory for a role that involves reading, thinking, or calls.
The anxiety around this number comes from a simple gap: almost nobody is told what a reasonable score looks like. People see a percentage, apply the intuition that percentages should be near 100, and conclude they are failing. This guide gives you the actual ranges and the context that goes with them.
Is 40% activity on Hubstaff okay?
For most desk roles, yes. Forty percent means roughly 240 of every 600 tracked seconds contained mouse or keyboard input, which is what a working pattern of alternating input and reading naturally produces.
Whether it is okay in your specific situation depends on two things that have nothing to do with the number: what your role involves, and what your client or manager expects. A support agent at 40 percent is unusual. A software architect at 40 percent is completely ordinary.
The number in isolation tells a reviewer very little, which is exactly why context matters more than the digit.
Realistic activity ranges by role
These ranges come from what the measurement mechanically produces given each type of work, not from a published standard. Use them as a sanity check rather than a target.

Notice the pattern. The ranges fall as the work gets more cognitive and rise as it gets more mechanical. That is the metric measuring input frequency, doing exactly what it is designed to do, and it is why comparing scores across roles is meaningless.
Why 100% activity is a problem, not a goal
A sustained score at or near 100 percent means every single second of a ten-minute block contained input, with no gap longer than one second across the entire window. Humans do not work that way.
Real people pause. They read the sentence they just wrote, glance at a second screen, reach for coffee, think about the next step. Those pauses show up as inactive seconds, and their absence is conspicuous.
This is the single most common mistake people make with automation tools in this category. A flat 100 percent across an eight-hour day does not look like an excellent worker. It looks like a script, because that is the only thing that produces it. A believable pattern varies.

If you are worried about your score, the most effective thing you can do is not raise the number. It is to make sure your delivered work is visible, because that is what actually settles the question.

Because the metric counts seconds with input, and large parts of real work produce none. This is a measurement limitation, not a reflection of your effort.

Does the activity level affect screenshots?
No. The two are entirely separate systems, and neither one influences the other in either direction.
A 90 percent hour does not trigger more screenshots, and a 20 percent hour does not trigger fewer. Screenshot frequency is a fixed organization setting, and capture moments are randomized within each block regardless of what your input is doing.

How to raise the number honestly
There are real workflow changes that raise the score without faking anything, because they change how you interact with the machine rather than what you produce.
- •Scroll as you read rather than reading a static page. Scrolling is input.
- •Take notes in a document during calls instead of listening passively.
- •Read in the tool you are working in rather than printing or using a tablet.
- •Break long reading into passes with short annotation between them.
- •Stop the timer for genuinely away moments, which improves the average rather than harming it.
