Does Hubstaff Screenshot Both Monitors? Multi-Screen Capture
Yes. By default Hubstaff captures every display connected to your machine, producing one image per monitor at each capture moment. If you run two screens, a single capture event normally yields two images rather than one.
That default is where most of the confusion starts, because the screenshot frequency setting counts capture events, not images. This guide explains the difference, why your screenshot count often looks wrong, and what happens with extended displays, virtual desktops, and mixed setups.
Does Hubstaff take screenshots of all monitors at once?
In the standard configuration, yes. When a capture fires, Hubstaff grabs each connected display at that same moment, so the images are simultaneous rather than staggered across a few seconds.
This is why a manager reviewing a dual-monitor member's timesheet sees images in pairs. The pair belongs to one capture event. It is not two separate captures that happened to land close together.
Some organizations configure capture to cover only the active display, meaning the monitor holding the focused window. This is less common than the all-displays default, but it exists, and it is the most likely explanation if you consistently see only one image where you expect two.
Why does Hubstaff only show 3 screenshots when I use two monitors?
Because three is the capture-event limit per 10-minute block, and what you are counting is probably events rather than images. If your view shows three thumbnails and each one expands into a two-monitor pair, the system is working normally.
There are a few other explanations worth ruling out, in the order they are most likely.

That last row catches people more often than you would expect. If you plug in a second display mid-session, the tracker may not pick it up until the timer restarts. The fix is to connect displays before starting the timer.
What counts as a monitor?
Anything the operating system reports as a connected display. That includes the obvious cases and several less obvious ones.
- •A laptop's built-in screen, even when the lid is open behind a docked external monitor
- •External monitors over HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or a dock
- •A television used as a display
- •An iPad running as an extended display through Sidecar or a similar feature
- •Virtual display adapters, including the dummy plugs some people use for headless setups
What does not count is a device that is merely mirroring rather than extending. A mirrored display shows the same content as its source and does not register as a distinct capture target on most systems.
Extended desktop vs virtual desktops
These two are easy to confuse and they behave very differently. An extended desktop spreads one workspace across multiple physical screens. Virtual desktops are multiple workspaces on the same physical screen, switched between with a keyboard shortcut.
Extended desktop across physical monitors
Every physical screen is captured. If you have a document on the left monitor and a browser on the right, both appear in the capture pair for that moment.
Virtual desktops on one screen
Only the visible one is captured. Windows virtual desktops and macOS Spaces both work this way, because the capture reads what is currently drawn to the display, and a background virtual desktop is not drawn to anything.
It is worth being straightforward about what this implies. Moving work to a second virtual desktop does hide it from a specific capture, and people do use this. It is also visible in other ways if app tracking is enabled, since the app names still register, and it does nothing for your activity percentage. We would not build a strategy on it.
Does a second monitor mean more screenshots per hour?
More images, yes. More capture events, no. The frequency setting is per organization and does not change based on how many displays you have connected.

Can Hubstaff detect that you have a second monitor?
Yes, in the trivial sense that the capture system enumerates connected displays in order to capture them. If two displays exist, the tracker knows there are two.
This is not a monitoring feature aimed at detecting anything about you. It is a technical requirement: software cannot capture screens without first asking the operating system which screens exist. The count is visible as a side effect rather than reported as a metric.
Does a second monitor change your activity percentage?
No. Activity percentage is calculated from mouse and keyboard input timing, and input is not attributed to a particular display. Two monitors and one monitor produce identical activity scores for identical input.
This trips people up because screenshots and activity feel like one system. They are not, and keeping them separate in your head makes both easier to reason about. Practical implications for a multi-monitor setup
A few things follow from all of this that are worth knowing if you work across several screens.
- 1Your total image count is higher than a single-monitor colleague's, at the same frequency setting. That is expected and is not a sign of stricter settings on your account.
- 2Personal content on a secondary screen is captured just as fully as work content on the primary. There is no primary-only rule by default.
- 3A sleeping second display produces a black image rather than being skipped, which can look like a fault but is not one.
- 4If your work legitimately involves sensitive client material, a second screen does not shield it. That is a conversation about the blur setting, not a technical workaround.
- 5Connect all displays before starting the timer so the capture set is complete from the first block.
Where Ghost Mode fits
Ghost Mode works on the input side, generating natural mouse movement, window focus changes, and keystroke timing so that stretches of real work with little input are not scored as idle. Monitor count makes no difference to it, because input is not per-display.
